Management Approach

Our internal approach to sustainability is collaborative and incorporates governance, guidance and management. The strategic management of sustainability is shared among numerous corporate groups: Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations; Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S); Human Resources; Investor Relations; Enterprise Risk Management; and Legal, among others. These groups monitor best practices, develop policies and standards, and support business units. The daily management of sustainability commitments and implementation of programs is guided by all Agrium business unit leaders and their teams.

DMAs

Disclosures on Management Approach (DMA) provide an overview of how we address highly relevant issues to achieve continual improvement in sustainability. They describe fundamental management components such as policies, responsibilities, strategies and monitoring, and set the context for associated performance information.

This diagram that mirrors the classic “Plan -> Do -> Check -> Adjust” cycle popularized in quality management circles. It reflects the fact that a management system must start with a plan and that it must be implemented, reviewed and improved upon.

  • Plan – To define what we want to achieve we set out commitments in the form of policies and goals, and identify the staff positions that are responsible for implementation.
  • Do – We strive to achieve our commitments by implementing strategies and procedures, and by communicating with, and training our employees.
  • Check – Audits are often used to monitor how well we are implementing our programs. Tracking our performance on specific indicators helps to identify areas for improvement.
  • Adjust – Each year we make changes to systems or structures, or adopt new programs to ensure continual improvement.

We have prepared DMAs for the following subject areas:

As a result of our materiality assessment, employee and contractor safety was determined a material topic for Agrium. This is a material topic at Agrium because we operate in an industry that involves heavy machinery, chemical processes and other workplace situations that have the potential to cause injury. We continually improve our Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) Management System that addresses safety and health, as well as environmental and security issues.

The Disclosure on Management Approach (DMA) for EHS&S provides an overview of how we address EHS&S issues to ensure continual improvement. This DMA describes such fundamental management components as policies, responsibilities, strategies, and monitoring, and sets the context for our performance information.

Please also see our DMAs on Public Safety and Chemicals and Crop Protection.

As a result of our materiality assessment, public safety was determined a material topic for Agrium. This is a material topic at Agrium because we run industrial processes in our facilities, and transport and distribute substances (e.g., ammonia) that have the potential to affect the safety of the general public should an incident occur.

The Disclosure on Management Approach (DMA) for Public Safety provides an overview of how we address public safety issues to ensure continual improvement. This DMA describes such fundamental management components as policies, responsibilities, strategies, and monitoring, and sets the context for our performance information.

Please also see our DMAs on Environment, Health, Safety and Security, and Chemicals and Crop Protection.

As a result of our materiality assessment, nutrient stewardship was determined a material topic for Agrium. This is a material topic because poorly managed nutrient applications can decrease customer profitability and increase nutrient losses, potentially degrading water and air. The emerging concept of extended producer responsibility means the misuse of nutrients by our customers has potential risk to Agrium as well. Finally, increasing regulations targeting limited nutrient use could affect Agrium’s profitability.

The Disclosure on Management Approach (DMA) for Nutrient Stewardship provides an overview of how we address this issue to ensure continual improvement. This DMA describes such fundamental management components as policies, responsibilities, strategies, and monitoring, and sets the context for our performance information.

Please also see our DMAs on Food Supply and Security and Chemicals and Crop Protection.

As a result of our materiality assessment, food supply and security was determined a material topic for Agrium. This is a material topic at Agrium because of the role our products play in contributing to increasing the current and future global food supply.

The Disclosure on Management Approach (DMA) for Food Supply and Security provide overviews of how we address these issues to ensure continual improvement. This DMA describes such fundamental management components as policies, responsibilities, strategies, and monitoring, and sets the context for our performance information.

Please also see our DMAs on Nutrient Stewardship and Chemicals and Crop Protection.

As a result of our materiality assessment, chemicals and crop protection was determined a material topic for Agrium. This is a material topic at Agrium because we sell chemicals and crop protection products that are increasingly scrutinized for their health and environmental impacts.

The Disclosure on Management Approach (DMA) for Chemicals and Crop Protection provide overviews of how we address these issues to ensure continual improvement. This DMA describes such fundamental management components as policies, responsibilities, strategies, and monitoring, and sets the context for our performance information.
