Growing Positive Impacts Together
Everything we do has an impact. Our sustainability programs are designed around the basic concept that
we continually will grow positive impacts, while working to reduce negative impacts on stakeholders and
the environment. While it is impossible to remove all negative impacts given the limitations of today's
technology, we are committed to minimizing them with the support of our stakeholders.
We have categorized stakeholders into five primary groups: communities, employees, customers, owners
and society. In this way we feel that all of those who have an affect on Agrium or can be affected by our
activities are considered.
Although it is not a stakeholder in the strict sense of the word, the environment is also affected by our activities. All of our stakeholders are concerned about environmental protection, so we included a separate section in this report on the environment.
The following pages demonstrate how a variety of stakeholders are engaging with Agrium to mutually create positive economic, societal and environmental impacts. In each stakeholder section, we communicate:
- Impacts - how our operations, products and services affect people and the planet
- Issues - our major risks and opportunities
- Involvement - how we engage stakeholders to mutually achieve success
- Implementation - our overall approach and specific actions taken to manage our impacts
- Illustration - an example of how we are striving to grow positive impacts
- Indicators - graphs, tables and figures that show our performance
In each stakeholder section we have attempted to address the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability. However, we realize that certain issues affect specific stakeholders to different extents (e.g., social issues and employees; economic issues and owners), so the relative weighting of the economic, environmental and social issues will vary in each stakeholder section. As well, we realize that some programs or projects affect more than one stakeholder. Where this occurs we have included stories and descriptions in the most relevant stakeholder section.
Finally, the illustrative examples included in the following sections are just some of many stories that depict Agrium's sustainability commitment.
Numerous additional examples are described on our website: www.agrium.com/in_the_community
