Stakeholder engagement is at the heart of sustainable development. Agrium strives to understand what our stakeholders value and would like sustained, so we can work together for the right outcomes. Otherwise, our efforts would address a fraction of what constitutes sustainable development — only how Agrium views it. Stakeholder engagement is what invigorates us to tackle new challenges in ways that will meet the needs of society.
partners in success and sustainability
If you look at Agrium’s business, almost everyone could be considered a stakeholder. However to engage in a more pragmatic manner, we have categorized stakeholders into these primary groups: communities, employees, customers, shareholders, and society and the environment. In this way we feel that those who have an effect on Agrium, or can be effected by our activities, are considered.
By sharing perspectives, we achieve a more balanced understanding of each other’s priorities.
The following pages illustrate how a variety of stakeholders are engaging with Agrium to mutually improve economic, societal and environmental well-being.
In each stakeholder section, we communicate:
our commitment to that stakeholder group;
the opportunities and challenges we face in living up to those commitments;
the actions taken to address the opportunities and challenges for improved sustainability performance; and
illustrative data on our performance.
In each stakeholder section, we have attempted to address the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability.
We used our 2003 sustainability report as an entry point in developing discussions with community groups and employees. We would like to use this report to further our dialogue with stakeholders. Please share your thoughts on this report using the feedback mechanisms noted on the back inside cover.
