Agrium has done a lot to contribute to its vision but if we are to truly make an impact on the world’s hungry we must partner with others with similar vision. There are three main associations in North America that represent the fertilizer industry. These are:
The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) – represents the fertilizer industry in Washington D.C. Their mission it to protect fertilizer from the plants where it is manufactured, to the plants where it is used. TFI conducts research, shares knowledge and helps the industry speak to society as a single voice about the benefits and impacts of fertilizer.
The Canadian Fertilizer Institute (CFI) – is the Canadian counterpart of the TFI. Canada plays a substantial role in world fertilizer markets. It supplies approximately 12% of the world's fertilizer materials and is the world's largest exporters of potash and elemental sulphur. It is estimated that the Canadian fertilizer industry contributes over $7 billion annually to the Canadian economy.
International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) The International Plant Nutrition Institute is a not-for-profit, science-based organization with a focus on agronomic education and research support. They are more international in nature. In 2007, the IPNI established programs in China, India, Southeast Asia, Northern Latin America, Brazil, Latin America-Southern Cone, the United States, and Canada, plus a new presence in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Many of their members reside outside of North America.
Their mission, as demonstrated in the story below, is to develop and promote scientific information about the responsible management of plant nutrition so we all benefit.
Feeding the World Responsibly:
The International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) employs more than 20 scientists globally to work with growers and researchers to increase crop production and environmental performance through the use of fertilizer best management practices. IPNI's efforts are currently focused on programs in North America, South America, Russia and Asia. Agrium is a significant supporter through financial contributions, management participation and membership on IPNI's Board.
The IPNI staff in Asia has continued in their efforts this year to bring the technology of balanced fertilizer use to growers. Balancing the use of macro, secondary and micronutrients continues to be IPNI's major focus. The challenges are many, but the opportunities are also abundant for those with the scientific knowledge to deliver this message to growers, their advisors, scientists and public policy makers.
