Programs
Agrium programs meet a wide range of needs within our communities. Requests for financial support must fall into one or more of the following programs.
Local Community Investment Program
Agrium's Local Community Investment Program supports charities and initiatives in the communities where we operate. Specifically targeted to meet the unique needs of each community, this program is managed by Agrium employees who work, live and play in these communities.
Global Community Investment Program
Local efforts are complemented by Agrium's Global Community Investment Program. This program supports charities or projects that are broader in scope, affecting multiple Agrium communities, often with a national impact.
Emergency Assistance
When emergencies occur, Agrium lends a helping hand. We provide emergency assistance funding to help communities manage and recover from disaster. This assistance is available only to communities where Agrium has operations.
Program Focus Areas
Each program can be divided into four focus areas. These ares are: growing the next generation by helping youth grow in mind, body and spirit; caring for our environment; building stronger communities and helping those in need. We chose these four areas as we believe they enrich our communities and encourage personal growth.
Growing the Next Generation:
How We Define It: Agrium encourages and supports programs that help youth reach their full potential. We believe that confident, capable and educated young people are better equipped to face the challenges of the future. We know that by investing in youth today, we are safeguarding healthy communities tomorrow.
How We Care: Agrium supports a multitude of education-based projects and programs including Caring for our Watersheds, The Schoolyard Naturalization Program, a horticulture therapy program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and our Seed Survivor interactive exhibit to name a few.
Caring For Our Environment:
How We Define It: At work and at play we all share the environment. Agrium continually works to minimize its negative impact on the environment and increase its positive impact. Support in this area may come in the form of funding projects that focus on environmental protection or in educating others to steward the environment.
How We Care: Agrium has worked with Ducks Unlimited Canada on a variety of wetland projects to protect and restore land to it natural habitat. One such project resides on the property of our Vanscoy facility. Several years ago we constructed small islands for the birds to nest in. We now have thousands of birds that migrate here to feed on a healthy population of aquatic life.
Building Stronger Communities:
How We Define It: Agrium understands that participation in civic events, arts and culture contributes to personal growth and helps people lead more satisfying lives. As may of Agrium’s offices and facilities are in rural locations, these programs are really valued by residents. As each community is different, the programs we support are unique to that region.
How We Care: Some of the organizations we support in this area include the StoryBook Theatre, one of Canada’s largest theatres for children and families, The Calgary International Children’s Festival and Theatre Calgary’s Agrium’s Curtain Raiser Program for Rural Students.
Helping Those In Need:
How We Define It: Agrium partners with local communities to support health and wellness service providers through education, research and the provision of emergency equipment and facilities. We actively seek out opportunities to help make life better for the less fortunate or disadvantaged.
How We Care: As each community has different needs, how we help varies from location to location. Some of the organizations we supported in 2009 in this category included the Alberta Guide Dog Service - Give a Kid a Guide Dog, the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta and the Canadian Liver Foundation Liver Health Education School Programs.
