Agrium is guided by a sustainability vision that holds us accountable for our actions and directs us to make the right choices for our employees, society and the environment.

Agrium is in the commodity business but not how you might think. Our commodity is food. Persistent debilitating hunger is pervasive over too much of the world and restricts great portions of society from achieving their full potential.

We supply growers around the world with crop inputs and nutrients allowing them to maximize food production so the hungry can obtain low-cost, high-quality food and to allow less productive agricultural lands to be used for other purposes.

In 2009, we partnered with a United Nations’ organization called Millennium Promise to support an innovative sustainability program in Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal was to provide farmers access to nitrogen fertilizer (urea) to increase and improve food production and additionally, provide income security for over 5,000 households in Sub-Saharan Africa.

We have some great stories and updates to share. To date:

  • Over 5,000 farmers in the Pampaida and Sauri villages, who previously had limited access to increased inputs for agricultural productivity, now have increased access and opportunity.

  • Over 5,000 households have experienced increased crop production, which in turn has resulted in increased incomes and food security.

  • Increased yields, as a result of this donation, help sustain the currently successful school meals programs in Pampaida and Sauri, which are improving educational outcomes.

  • Increased agricultural production, as a result of this partnership, supports improvements in health by providing food and nutrition to Sauri and Pampaida’s population and by generating income that households can spend on health services.

We also just announced that we are doubling our commitment in 2011 to $1-million dollars to further this important and sustainable program. This will not only bring Agrium's urea fertilizer to Africa, it will cover the shipment costs of the products to the villages this program supports.

  • Our involvement will continue in Sauri, Nigeria and grow to include sites in Malawi, Uganda, Ethiopia and Senegal.

  • It will further increase support from the current 5,000 to 25,000 people in the Millennium Promise villages, which further contributes to the longer-term sustainability of this important program.
