Sulphuric Acid

Sulphuric Acid is produced at our Redwater and Conda plants.

Product List

Agrium manufactures sulphuric acid that is used primarily as a raw material in the manufacture of phosphorus fertilizers, although some is also offered for sale.

Industrial Uses

Sulphuric Acid is used in:

  • The production of alum
  • The pulp and paper industry

Manufacturing Process -
How we make Sulphuric Acid

Sulphur, air and water are used to produce sulphuric acid. Air is blown through a drying tower to remove moisture from the air and then feeds into a sulphur burner. Molten sulphur and air burn to produce sulphur dioxide.

The sulphur dioxide passes into a converter where it is further oxidized over vanadium oxide catalyst beds to form sulphur trioxide.

The sulphur trioxide gas enters a tower where it is absorbed in wet circulating 98-99% sulphuric acid. A small slipstream of the resulting acid is diluted with water to produce either 93% or 98% sulphuric acid, which is then stored in tanks.
