Potassium

The Value of Potassium

Potassium is required in large quantities for healthy crop growth and development.

Potassium regulates water balance, the activity of many enzymes, photosynthesis, starch synthesis, nitrogen uptake and protein production. Crops with adequate potassium show increased stem strength, improved disease resistance and greater drought resistance.

Plants absorb soil solution potassium in the K+ form.

Potash is the raw material from which potassium products are manufactured. There are only a few potash deposits in the world, with the largest in Saskatchewan, where Agrium’s mine is located.

Best Management Practices

  1. Soil test to estimate the soil’s ability to supply potassium.
  2. Band or seed place potassium in the soil to increase plant uptake.
  3. Potassium is equally effective if fall or spring applied.
  4. Apply with other nutrients to reduce application cost.
