This position will report directly to the Mine Manager.
Specific responsibilities will include:
Direct staff of two (2) professionals, and coordinated consultants as needed to meet the environmental heath and safety needs of the mining operation.
Ensure compliance of environmental, health, and safety regulations by identifying and analyzing problems, then finalizing suggestions and recommendations for improvements to mine management.
Direct the mine permitting process to include the preparation of environmental assessments and environmental impact statements as required for exploration and mining operations.
Posses a strong hydrology background to included plume modeling, surface and ground water quality requirements.
Assist with the preparation of mine reclamation plans and ensure that the plans meet the mine permits and regulatory requirements.
Direct the reclamation activities of the contractor, monitoring for compliance with plans and cost to the operations.
Interface with regulatory and other governmental representatives as required.
Implements and maintains company policies adhering to local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations.
Ensures compliance with federal, state and mine standards through observation of employee conduct and physical conditions.
Perform or direct periodic environmental and safety inspection audits of the facility and initiates corrective action to reduce costs and injuries and provide a safe working environment.
Monitors performance reports for trends and conditions and take corrective action to reduce or eliminate problems.
Direct or investigates accidents, near misses or problem areas and recommends future preventive measures including alternative methods or fixtures to alleviate hazards.
Complies and submits reports required by company management, regulatory agencies and insurance companies.
Qualifications of the position include:
possess a B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, or Environmental Management, professional registration would be a plus;
have a minimum of 10+ years experience in EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) or equivalent, preferably within a mine environment;
have a strong knowledge of regulatory laws (e.g., EPA, MSHA, RCRA, etc.);
have knowledge or experience in the implementation of site-specific environmental programs, procedures, and policies (water, air, hazardous waste/disposal procedures);
possess problem solving, trouble-shooting, and diagnostic skills;
exhibit excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; and
have excellent computer skills with a knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. SAP experience a plus.
