Fire at Agriumís Hartsville South Carolina facility
Release Date: 2/15/2011
CALGARY, Alberta - A fire in a storage warehouse at Agriumís Hartsville South Carolina NPK Rainbow Fertilizer Operation occurred during the evening of February 14. Fortunately, all employees on site were accounted for and there were no injuries. The fire affected the storage facility which housed approximately 17,000 tonnes of dry finished product and raw materials.
We are working with the South Carolina State Department of Health and Environmental Quality (DHEQ) to monitor any impacts to air and water of the surrounding area and we have also brought in environmental consultants to support in our efforts.
Customer needs will be met through our Americus, Georgia and Florence, Alabama facilities. The facility and product were insured and as a result there is expected to be no material financial impact on Agrium.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and Agrium is working with the appropriate regulatory agencies. This incident has resulted in the temporary shutdown of the facility.
We are sorry for the impact this incident has had on the neighbors of the facility and the Hartsville community. Agrium is committed to protecting the quality of the environment in which it operates and ensuring the health and safety of our employees, customers and the public impacted by our operations.
