West Sacramento Nitrogen Operations is a terminal and manufacturing site that imports anhydrous ammonia and urea from ocean going ships and barges (15-20 vessels annually). The plant employs around 30 people and is also supported by local contracted labor. The facility is located on 20 acres (8 hectares) in the West Sacramento Industrial Park on the Sacramento River deepwater channel.
Environmental and Safety Stewardship
Agrium proactively pursues opportunities to improve the environment. Compliance with state, local, and federal regulations is just a beginning. Being a good neighbor and responsible corporate citizen is part of our culture.
Our environmental stewardship begins with the safety of our employees. Everyone benefits from having a safe workplace, which comes from careful attention to safe operating procedures, training, emergency preparedness, and preventative maintenance.
With the installation of the Reverse Osmosis stormwater treatment facility the West Sacramento plant has become capable of collecting and treating all stormwate that falls on the site. The storm water collection and treatment system serves Agrium’s 20-acre nitrogen production, storage and distribution facility. The system is designed to collect 95% of all storm events occurring over a 100-year period. Water is collected from the entire site. Pre-filters and reverse osmosis units filter and remove nitrogen compounds from the storm water. The resultant water is then utilized in the nitrogen solution manufacturing process to minimize use of City supplied water. The system was completed in November of 2001 and is one of the first of its kind in the Sacramento region.
Impact on Local Economy
The West Sacramento production facility provides nitrogen based fertilizers to growers from Arizona to Washington. Production operates 24 hours per day and seven days per week. In addition to providing jobs and approximately $350,000 annually in local taxes the plant actively supports the local charities and educational programs. The plant provides funds to the Washington Unified School District for the purchase of educational school supplies for underprivilaged children in West Sacarmento.
