Redwater, Alberta

The Redwater fertilizer plant occupies 372 hectares along the North Saskatchewan River, 50 km northeast of Edmonton. This operation directly employs well over 500 people, in Nitrogen Operations, Phosphate Operations, Maintenance, Product Loading, Services and Administration.

Environmental Stewardship
Agrium’s Redwater Fertilizer Operations is the largest fertilizer complex in Canada and one of the largest in North America.

Redwater strives to improve their environmental performance by optimizing their existing equipment, eliminating or reusing waste streams, and seeking out new technology which will further reduce emission levels.

The Redwater site is commited to open and honest communications with their community.  Newsletters and letters from the plant manager are regularly sent to neighbours keeping them up-to-date on Redwater's Operations.  A community information line is in place where neighbours can call anytime and receive information about site activities.  The information is a recorded message which primarily discusses events such as shutdowns, startups, venting, etc.  The line is set up with an option to either leave a message or talk with an Agrium employee.  Additionally, site representatives offer to meet annually with the neighbours in their homes to discuss operations and they also hold regular meetings with a Community Advisory Panel to address topical issues.

There are two wetland areas which are home to waterfowl, ducks and geese, in the southwest part of the site and the northeast near the picnic grounds.

Impact on Local Economy
The Redwater Fertilizer Operations employs over 500 people in various jobs and pays approximately $35 million in annual payroll. About half of the employees live in the neighbouring communities of Redwater, Gibbons, Bruderheim and Fort Saskatchewan; and half live in the areas of Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park. The site pays $2.4 million in municipal tax annually. Agrium’s United Way support matches employee campaigns dollar for dollar. In 2005, the Redwater site combined contribution to the United Way was over $170,000.
