The Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations is the first ever phosphate mine in Canada and ranks as one of the highest grade phosphate mines in the world. The Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations ranks as one of the highest grade phosphate mines in the world. Located about 40 km southwest of Kapuskasing in the Cargill Township, this mine has been developed to supply high quality, low cost phosphate rock to Agrium's Redwater, Alberta facility. The site employs approximately 160 permanent people in the open pit mine and in mill operations.
In the Community The Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations has worked diligently to establish and maintain good relationships with local government and community organizations. The positive impact of the mine has been felt in the Kapuskasing area in the form of local employment at the mine and on the creation of numerous spin-off jobs in the local service and supply companies.

Agrium identifies, assesses and responsibly manages its environmental, health and safety risks through a comprehensive Environment, Health and Safety Management System that includes monitoring the performance and achievement of objectives and targets. Agrium conducts every aspect of its business in conformance with applicable laws, regulations and industry standards. Where there are no legal or industry standards, we will use responsible practices to minimize environment, health and safety impacts.
Agrium's environmental focus includes water usage, water quality and fisheries habitat. The site has two distinct discharge periods during the year, during which effluent is released to the downstream environment. Continued environmental monitoring is in place to ensure appropriate management of the environment. Agrium's Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations functions within all regulatory permits and approvals and works with regulatory agencies to monitor the surrounding and downstream environment.
