Joffre, Alberta

The Joffre Nitrogen Operations, located on a 195 hectare site near Joffre, Alberta (approximately 23 km northeast of Red Deer) produces anhydrous ammonia. Product is pipelined to the Chigwell Distribution Terminal,19 km north of the Joffre plant. The plant site and distribution terminal occupies less than 40 hectres of the total 265 hectare land area. the remainder is used for farmland. Over 30 people are employed at the Joffre site.

Environmental Stewardship
The Joffre Plant uses modern pollution control methods. Plant design enables Joffre to conform to Agrium’s high standards and to government regulations.

Due to its pure feedstocks, the amount of gaseous emissions at Joffre is quite low. Vapour collected from the process is used as fuel gas for the production of high pressure steam.

The Joffre plant collects its waste and surface water runoff in one of two effluent ponds, where it is treated and tested prior to discharge to the Red Deer River. Discharge volume is very low at approximately 12,000 m3/year.

The groundwater and soil throughout the plant and the surrounding farm land is regularly monitored and air quality at the edge of the plantsite is continuously monitored.

Impact on Local Economy
The Joffre Plant spends millions of dollars in Alberta for raw materials, goods, services and equipment. Agrium’s United Way support matches employee campaigns dollar for dollar. In 2005, the Joffre site combined contribution to the United Way was over $12,000 winning the Chairman’s Award for the United Way of Central Alberta. The Joffre site is also a very active member in the Lacombe County Mutual Aid Organization.
